HistoryOur dental practice was started in 1971 by Dr. Michael Dougherty. One year later, Dr. William Barbour returned to his native Rockland after serving as a dentist in the U.S. Navy. He joined Dr. Dougherty for what was initially thought to be a temporary basis. In 1973, a partnership was formed between Drs. Dougherty and Barbour, and thus Dougherty and Barbour was born.
In 1974, construction was completed for a new facility, and the practice was moved from its Main Street Rockland address to the current Route One (Commercial Street) Rockport location.
In 1978, Dr. Deborah Endl, who was looking for a practice opportunity in the Camden area, associated with Dougherty and Barbour. At that time, Dr. Endl was only one of a few female dentists practicing in the state of Maine. In 1981, Dr. Endl became a partner, and the practice name was changed to Dougherty, Barbour, and Endl.
In 1984, Dr. David Pier joined the practice, as by now the office was serving not only Rockland, Camden, and Rockport, but several other Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo county communities. Soon thereafter, Dr. Pier became a partner in the practice, and we became known as Dougherty, Barbour, Endl, and Pier.
In 1995, a major expansion project was undertaken and four state of the art treatment rooms were added to the building.
In 1996, Dr. Michael Hersom joined the practice, returning to his native Maine after completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency and service in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Hersom became a partner in 1998, and for a very brief period, the name of the practice was Dougherty, Barbour, Endl, Pier, and Hersom.
Sadly, in 1998, Dr. Dougherty passed away following a long, gallant battle with cancer. Shortly after Dr. Dougherty's passing, the name of the practice was changed to Glen Cove Dental Associates.
In 2004, mid-coast native Dr. Amy Campbell joined the practice after completing a fellowship in Implant Dentistry, and in 2014 became a partner in the practice.
